Gmail getting personalized smart replies as Google Vids adds AI avatars

Besides Meet Speech Translation, Google announced a slew of new Workspace features at I/O 2025 across Gmail (like personalized smart replies), Docs, and Vids.

Gmail

After becoming Contextual last year, Gmail is now offering Personalized Smart Replies. Google will craft responses based on your writing styles as determined by past emails.

This can reflect your usual greetings, formality, and length. The goal is to reflect your tone — “whether crisp and formal or warm and conversational” — so that “replies sound authentically like you.” Meanwhile, the contents of the smart reply can take into account information in past emails and files in Google Drive.

In addition to writing and finding messages, Gemini can now help organize your Gmail. Inbox Cleanup can archive or delete past messages that are no longer needed. For example, you can conversationally tell Gemini to “Delete all of my unread emails from The Groomed Paw from last year.” The chat will note how many messages are covered and let you see them, with users tapping to confirm the action.

Finally, the compose window is integrating Google Calendar appointment scheduling: “Gemini in Gmail detects when you’re trying to set up a meeting and surfaces a helpful nudge, making it easy to share your booking page right in Gmail, significantly reducing the time and effort spent coordinating schedules.” All these capabilities will be generally available next quarter.

Google Docs

Like Gmail, when prompting in Google Docs, you can have Gemini stick to sources you’ve selected. Gemini will only use documents, slides, and other data in Google Drive that you’ve manually linked to in the side panel. Source-grounded writing will be generally available in Q3.

Meanwhile, Imagen 4 is Google’s latest state-of-the-art image generation model. It offers “richer, more detailed visuals,” as well as “more accurate spelling and text rendering.” Imagen 4 in Docs, Slides, Vids, and other Workspace products is generally available starting today.

Google Vids

Introduced last year, Google’s newest Workspace app lets you collaboratively create and edit videos. Google Vids is now coming to consumer AI subscribers, with the app getting a new UI today that better guides users along the creation process.

Google also announced new AI features, with the highlight being AI Avatars that save you from having to appear on-camera. Leveraging Google DeepMind models with accurate lip syncing, one example use case is businesses that need to make a lot of support videos. Now, all they need to do is upload a script and select from a number of avatars that will speak to the camera. This is coming to Labs in June.

Other new futures today include being able to convert whole slide decks into videos:

Imagine transforming an existing sales deck or a quarterly business review presentation into dynamic, shareable videos that truly capture your audience’s attention. Gemini can help generate scripts, voiceovers, animations, and more. (Generally available next quarter.)

Balance Sound will normalize different audio levels/sources across an entire video. This will be generally available next month.

Transcript Trim will automatically remove “ahs” and “umm,” as well as other filler words and awkward pauses, from what you’ve recorded so you don’t have to do another capture session. It’s entering Labs next quarter.
