Klarna, the buy now pay later company, wants to be your carrier with $40/mo plans

The rise of MVNOs has made it possible for some interesting names to power your mobile phone service. Google, Ryan Reynolds, and… others, have all been attached to their own mobile phone carriers. Now, Klarna is joining the ring with its own $40/month plans – and yes, that’s the “buy now pay later” people.

Klarna is well-known as a service that allows users to buy items with installments, breaking up a payment over the course of a few weeks or months. You can finance everything from a new outfit to a burrito on Doordash using Klarna, and now the company is looking to provide mobile services.

These new plans will leverage AT&T’s network in the US with a $40 monthly charge for unlimited data, talk, and text. Activation is handled via eSIM through the existing Klarna app, meaning you can pay for your phone service alongside other things you’ve financed.

This is built on “Gigs,” an “operating system for mobile services” which provides services for brands to launch their own MVNO with minimal resources. The company touts it can let “any tech brand… be a mobile provider.” The company also provides these services to some travel SIM apps such as Nubank and Wealthsimple, as well as providing services for the Light Phone and other companies. Klarna is perhaps the biggest name “Gigs” is working with so far.
